Crabtree Nature Center

  • Location: Barrington, IL

Client: Forest Preserves of Cook County

    Size: 1,600 Square Feet

    Completed: 2023

  • The landscapes at the northern corner of Cook County demonstrate the confluence of tallgrass prairies and oak-hickory woodlands. Here, the northernmost edges of the midwestern prairies meet wetlands which then meet woodlands, and the landscape continues in this patchwork way. Plants and animals take advantage of these edge conditions for food and shelter.

Space Haus was responsible for the design and construction administration of all interior and exterior exhibits that focus on this story of edges and expanses. The new exhibits replaced those that were made when the building opened 50 years ago. The project scope also includes architectural renovations and sustainability-related upgrades to the building, one of just six nature centers within the 75,000 acre Forest Preserves of Cook County.
