  • Shedd Aquarium Trustees wanted to redefine how their guests experienced the 1991 Oceanarium, a 35,000 square foot pavilion that housed marine mammals. At that time, animals were visible to the public through static displays and content was delivered as low-key “presentations” by animal trainers. The Experience Team, led by Bryan Schuetze, reworked this approach and developed exciting and entertaining experiences that resulted in deeper and more meaningful animal connections for Shedd’s guests.

Following four years of research and planning, the Oceanarium was transformed. A new Beluga Whale encounter pool was added to the 3 million gallon Whale Harbor. A Sea Lion Habitat, Northwest Coast River and Estuary, and a modified Sea Otter environment were also added. Interpretation was redeveloped, graphics were redesigned and guest engagement programs were developed.

While working at the John G. Shedd Aquarium, Bryan Schuetze was Lead Designer and Project Lead and a member of the Aquarium’s Owners Team that oversaw construction of the Abbott Oceanarium.
